Topic: The Harlem Renaissance

Integration Ideas:
-Use music to tell the personal story of Louis Armstrong.
-Use books on video about musician, Duke Ellington, with a connection to alliteration.
-Introduce a unit or activity with "Jazz Time," a video on United Streaming.
-Make a movie of clips.
-Find resources on the Kennedy Center Website such as "Drop Me Off at the Harlem Renaissance"
-Research Arts Area person for their basic biographical information.
-Art Project: Create a shadow puppet with moving arms and legs of a figure from the Harlem Renaissance.


Unit Idea:
-The Great Migration led to the Harlem Renaissance.
-The Phillips Collection Website contains a series of Jacob Lawrence paintings that illustrate the Great Migration.
     -Jacob Lawrence sets the tone in his paintings with his use of negative space.
-Project Idea: Students create a story map of the narrative details from the Jacob Lawrence series.
